Wi-Fi is Leading-Edge Technology in 2011

Las Vegas--A lot of the gadgets and toys on display at this year's CES show will have one aspect in common: Wi-Fi capability. Several of these products will also feature the latest in Wi-Fi networking; Wi-Fi Direct—which connects wireless clients directly without need for a Wi-Fi network or hotspot and is being cited as a key technology for 2011.
CES 2011
The Wi-Fi Alliance has just released a new poll that solidifies the fact that consumers want Wi-Fi in just about every technology product. The poll was conducted in conjunction with Wakefield Research. Key findings include:
• 62% of respondents said they will make sure their next cell phone is Wi-Fi enabled.
• 65% said it is likely they will seek Wi-Fi capability in every tech item they buy in 2011.
• 75% of consumers will consider purchasing at least one Wi-Fi-enabled product in 2011.
The report also details the phenomenal growth of Wi-Fi. There were 761 million shipments of Wi-Fi products in 2010—with consumer electronics and handhelds comprising more than half of that total. If any further proof is needed on how pervasive wireless connectivity is becoming, consider the recent acquisition of Wi-Fi chipmaker Atheros by Qualcomm for 3.1 billion.
That staggering growth is expected to continue. According to the Wi-Fi Alliance's report, the number of Wi-Fi certified products jumped 61% from 2009 with most of that surge due to the consumer electronic and handset markets.

The Wi-Fi Alliance also outlined the roadmap for Wi-Fi in its report. Continued innovation will include:
• Wi-Fi certified 60 GHz for multi-gigabit data rates between nearby devices; planned for 2012
• Wi-Fi certified Very High Throughput in 5 GHz, for gigabit data rate networking
• Wi-Fi certified hotspots for a seamless user experience in managed hotspot environments; with the goal of making public-Wi-Fi a "cellular-like" experience
• Television White Spaces may mean Wi-Fi operation in newly available television frequencies; capable of supporting neighborhood-area networking for smart grid, machine-to-machine communications.
